Portugal is worth it if you want EU residence you can keep with 14 days every two years, you can lock €500,000 in a fund that might not give it back on a timetable you like, and you can wait a year or more for AIMA. It is not worth it if the picture in your head is still a Baixa apartment and a passport in five years.
The pain is nostalgia. The 2010s product was property plus a short citizenship clock. The 2026 product is a securities subscription plus a 10-year nationality wait for most applicants (7 for CPLP). Same brand. Different machine.
The case for
- A statutory stay you can actually live with if your life is elsewhere.
- Permanent residence at year 5, which the 2026 nationality reform did not stretch - a hidden gem for people who never wanted a passport.
- Capital that is potentially recoverable, subject to performance, liquidity, market and issuer risk - unlike a Malta contribution.
- A serious EU jurisdiction with a real passport at the end, if you can wait and learn A2 Portuguese.
The case against
- AIMA. The wait is part of the price.
- Ten years to citizenship for most Golden Visa applicants. Greece's naturalisation clock is shorter, even if Greece's exam is harder.
- EU citizens cannot use this visa. If that is you, you were sold a ghost.
- The fund is an investment. CMVM listing is not eligibility. Early-exit stories on forums are not a redemption right.
- IFICI is not old NHR. Do not buy the visa for a tax fairy tale.
What people on the internet are saying: 2026 comment threads are split between "still the grown-up EU program" and "I would not start now, I would pick Greece." Both can be true for different goals. Secondary, and useful only after you write your one-sentence goal.
