Is the Portugal Golden Visa Worth It in 2026?

Worth it if you want a light-stay EU card and can wait on AIMA and a 10-year passport clock. Not worth it if you still think you are buying a Lisbon flat or a five-year citizenship.

Portugal is worth it if you want EU residence you can keep with 14 days every two years, you can lock €500,000 in a fund that might not give it back on a timetable you like, and you can wait a year or more for AIMA. It is not worth it if the picture in your head is still a Baixa apartment and a passport in five years.

The pain is nostalgia. The 2010s product was property plus a short citizenship clock. The 2026 product is a securities subscription plus a 10-year nationality wait for most applicants (7 for CPLP). Same brand. Different machine.

The case against

What people on the internet are saying: 2026 comment threads are split between "still the grown-up EU program" and "I would not start now, I would pick Greece." Both can be true for different goals. Secondary, and useful only after you write your one-sentence goal.

FAQs

Is Portugal still worth it after the 10-year citizenship change?+

If you wanted a five-year passport, the case is weaker. If you wanted a light-stay EU card and year-5 permanent residence, the case is largely intact.

Is Greece better value?+

Greece is cheaper to enter on some property routes, needs no stay, and has a 7-year naturalisation clock with a hard exam. Portugal has a recoverable fund story and a stronger passport at the end. Different products.

Can EU citizens use it?+

No.
