Is the Italy Investor Visa Worth It in 2026?

Worth it if you want to pass a Committee before you wire, and you can live with startup or company risk. Not worth it if you are buying it only for a €300,000 flat tax you will never elect.

Italy is worth it if the idea of sending €250,000 to a startup before anyone in Rome has said yes makes your stomach drop. The nulla osta exists for that feeling. It is not worth it if you think you are buying a cheap EU passport or a tax regime you will never move for.

The pain is the word "Golden Visa" on a startup term sheet. You are buying equity risk plus a two-year card plus a questura. That can be a good trade. It is a bad trade if the deck hid the risk under a flag.

What people on the internet are saying: Italy is the "sleeper" on English forums — low volume, less marketing noise, more process anxiety. That matches the official story. Secondary, and fair.

FAQs

Is Italy cheaper than Portugal?+

The startup route can be a lower headline (€250,000 vs €500,000). The risk is higher. Bonds at €2 million are not cheaper.

Do I need the flat tax to make Italy worth it?+

No. Most people who never move never elect it. Buy the visa for the card and the sequencing.

Is there a minimum stay?+

No fixed annual stay is published to keep the permit. Tax residency is separate.
