My Portugal Golden Visa File Is Stuck (AIMA, Card, Clock)

Silence after a Portugal filing is usually a queue, not a secret refusal. What to check, what a lawsuit can and cannot do, and how the 10-year citizenship clock interacts with a pending card.

If you filed a Portugal Golden Visa and the only update is another month of quiet, you are not imagining the wait. AIMA inherited a huge immigration backlog when it replaced SEF. Golden Visa files sit inside that pile. A clean new 2026 file can still take 12 to 18 months to a first card. Older files have taken longer.

The pain is not theoretical. You wired €500,000. Your child is aging. Your lawyer's email says "we are monitoring." You want a lever, not a mantra.

This page is the lever map: what "stuck" usually is, what you can still do, and the citizenship-clock trap that makes people file the wrong lawsuit.

First, name the stage

StageWhat it feels likeWhat it usually is
Submitted, no biometrics dateA black holeThe common 2024–2026 stall. AIMA assigns the slot. Lisbon and Porto run slower than smaller offices in many practitioner reports.
Biometrics done, no card"They have my fingerprints and my money"A second queue. Nomad Gate posters who sat 2025 biometrics have reported cards in about four months — and others still waiting past 90 business days. Secondary, not a government table.
Card in hand, clock panic"Did the 2026 law steal my five years?"A legal question, not an AIMA delay. See the citizenship-clock extra.
Lawyer silentStuck sociallyA different problem. Read the lawyer page and ask for the filing number.

If you cannot produce an AIMA filing number, you are not stuck. You are unfiled. That is a lawyer problem.

If you have a number, the next section is what actually moves a file.

What can still move it

Hidden gem: a pending Golden Visa file that had not filed for nationality by 18 May 2026 does not keep the old five-year citizenship rule. Winning a faster card does not rewind Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026. People who sue for a slot and think they are suing for a five-year passport are fighting the wrong war. The clock extra exists for that sentence.

What people on the internet are saying: the Nomad Gate thread "New AIMA Process — Receiving Final Approval/Residency Card" (2025–2026) is a log of biometric dates and card dates, including people who filed lawsuits in 2024–2025 to get an appointment. Use it as a weather report. It is not AIMA policy, and it is not your file.

Secondary press has also quoted multi-year averages and government pledges to clear Golden Visa backlogs during 2026. Pledges are not cards. Budget the 12–18 month working range we use on the requirements page, then be pleasantly surprised.

If the wait is breaking a family plan, you need options, not another status email.

When to add a second plan

A Greece or Italy filing while Portugal is pending is possible in some households and disastrous in others. The forms will ask what else you have applied for. Tell the truth. Do not abandon the Portuguese investment because a forum said Greece is "faster" unless counsel has modelled both files. Portugal's year-5 permanent residence is still a real destination even if citizenship is now ten years for most applicants.

EU, EEA, Swiss and Andorran nationals should not be in this queue at all. They were never ARI-eligible. If that is you, someone sold you the wrong product.

FAQs

Is my Portugal Golden Visa rejected if I have heard nothing for a year?+

Usually no. Silence is the backlog. Ask for the filing number and whether any document request is sitting unread. A year of quiet on a 2024–2025 file is common enough to be banal, and still miserable.

Does a lawsuit speed up AIMA?+

Sometimes it produces a biometric date. It does not rewrite the nationality clock, and it does not guarantee a card the next month. Ask for recent Golden-Visa-specific outcomes, not a generic immigration-lawsuit pitch.

Does the wait count toward citizenship?+

The 2026 law counts from the first residence title, not from the day you wired the fund. A long wait before the first card is lost calendar time on the nationality clock. Permanent residence at year 5 still runs from lawful residence under the Golden Visa, which is why the first card date matters twice.

Can I travel in Schengen while I wait?+

A pending ARI file is not a Schengen residence card. Travel on your current passport and visas. Do not treat a Portuguese filing receipt as a French work permit.
