Golden Visa for Indian Citizens (2026): Residence vs a Second Passport

India does not allow ordinary dual citizenship. That single fact should decide whether you buy a residence card or a citizenship program — before anyone mentions a villa.

If you hold an Indian passport and someone is selling you a Caribbean citizenship as a casual extra, stop. India does not allow ordinary dual citizenship. A second passport is a decision to give up Indian citizenship, with OCI as the usual after-story — not a souvenir in a second drawer.

The pain is that the global Golden Visa market is built for people who can collect stamps. Indian families often want mobility, a school, a Plan B, or a Gulf tax base, and they get pitched a passport they cannot casually hold. Residence-by-investment and citizenship-by-investment are different purchases. For an Indian citizen they can be different lives.

Decide the object first

If you want to keep Indian citizenship, buy a residence: Greece, Portugal, Italy, Malta, UAE. Those cards do not, by themselves, make you stop being Indian.

If you want a second nationality, you are talking about surrendering the Indian passport when the other country requires exclusivity — and Caribbean CBI will make you a citizen of that island. Take Indian counsel on OCI, tax, and whether your career even allows it. This site will not walk you through a surrender. We will say: do not buy CBI as if it were a Greece flat.

That is the fork almost every India-facing webinar skips. Here is the residence shortlist.

Residence programs Indian families actually use

Hidden gem: Portugal's seven-year CPLP clock is not an India perk. Do not let a deck imply it is. Hidden gem two: an NRI tax position in India and a UAE or Portugal residence are three systems. FEMA, RBI, and Indian tax residence do not disappear because a Greek notary smiled.

What people on the internet are saying: Indian forums treat the UAE Golden Visa as a lifestyle default and Europe as a school/Plan B. That split is rational. The irrational part is buying a Caribbean passport on an EMI-style webinar without an Indian-law opinion on citizenship.

FAQs

Can I keep my Indian passport and get a Caribbean one?+

Not as ordinary dual citizenship. India does not allow that in the normal case. A second citizenship usually means exiting Indian citizenship and, if eligible, holding OCI. Get Indian-law advice before you pay a CIU.

What is the most common Golden Visa for Indians who want to stay Indian?+

Residence, not CBI. UAE for Gulf life and speed; Greece or Portugal for an EU card. Malta if the family net (including grandparents) is the point.

Does a UAE Golden Visa change my Indian tax?+

It can, if you also break Indian tax residence under Indian rules. The visa alone does not. That is an Indian CA / lawyer question.

Is Portugal faster for Indians because of CPLP?+

No. India is not a CPLP country. The seven-year nationality clock is not yours.
