Golden Visa and School-Age Kids in 2026: Card vs Classroom

A residence card can make school enrollment possible. It does not automatically place a child in an international school, fix fees, or replace the need to live near the classroom. Greece and Malta MPRP can keep a card alive without presence, but school terms cannot.

TL;DR

  • A residence card can make school enrolment lawful where the child qualifies, but it does not reserve a seat or set tuition.
  • Published annual tuition bands run about €12,000–€27,000 in Lisbon, €9,000–€15,000 in Athens, €6,000–€17,000 in Malta, and AED 30,000–110,000 in Dubai, before extras.
  • Zero-stay renewal is not school-year presence. Monday-to-Friday school means a relocation lifestyle, not a parked card.
  • Greece includes unmarried children under 21. At 21, a prior family-permit holder can move to an independent three-year permit under Article 95.

A future option and a seat next term are different purchases

The first question is whether you want a residence card for a possible future school year or need to enroll a child within the next 12 months. The first can suit a low-presence plan. The second needs a home, a school process, and term-time presence.

That separates the card from the classroom. Next is what the family rules confirm.

What the family rules say

Portugal's family page says dependants can live, work, and study, with children aged 18 to 26 covered when single, dependent, and in full-time study. Italy's family route permits study, but reunification delays can exceed 12 months, so a school start should follow issued permits rather than the nulla osta alone.

Greece allows unmarried children under 21 on the investor family file. At 21, a child who already held the family permit can receive an independent three-year permit under Article 95. Malta MPRP covers children and dependent adult children, while UAE family permits and US EB-5 derivative rules use their own age and dependency tests.

That answers whether the child may be included. Next is what the residence card does not guarantee.

Budget the classroom separately

Indicative published 2025/26 to 2026/27 annual tuition bands are about €12,000–€27,000 in Lisbon, €9,000–€15,000 in Athens, €6,000–€17,000 in Malta, and AED 30,000–110,000 in Dubai. Registration, transport, meals, uniforms, and capital levies can sit outside tuition.

A residence right does not guarantee admission or a preferred catchment. Whether a Greek blue receipt or a pending Portugal ARI file alone completes enrolment remains a local question, so obtain written confirmation before paying a deposit.

Published tuition bands (indicative, confirm with schools)

Tuition is separate from the residence card. Indicative published bands for common international options run roughly €12,000–€27,000 in Lisbon, about €8,700–€15,000 at International School of Athens for 2026/27 year groups on the school fee page, about €6,000–€17,000 across common Malta internationals in aggregator listings, and roughly AED 30,000–110,000 in Dubai depending on school and year group. Registration, transport, meals, uniforms, exams, and capital levies often sit outside tuition.

These are bands for planning, not quotes. Always re-open the school's fee PDF for the enrolment year before depositing. A Golden Visa approval letter does not freeze last year's brochure.

Age ceilings and the classroom presence problem

Greece includes unmarried children under 21 on the investor family file (Law 5038/2023 Art. 95). At 21, a prior family-permit holder can move to an independent three-year permit; they are not "likely included" as a dependent at 21–24. Portugal's published family wording covers older studying dependants under its own 18–26 style rules. Italy family study rights attach after the family permit, and reunification can lag past 12 months.

Zero-stay renewal (Greece, Malta MPRP) keeps a card alive. Monday-to-Friday school does not. If enrolment is inside 12 months, budget housing near the school, term-time presence, and admissions timelines. Parking a card for a hypothetical future Year 7 is a different purchase from starting school next September.

Insider tip

If a spouse's local job and the children's school are both day-one needs, start with countries where family work and study rights are explicit, then begin reunification early.

Common mistake. Buying a zero-stay Golden Visa as if the residence card guaranteed an international-school seat. Admissions and tuition remain separate decisions.

Frequently asked

Does a Golden Visa get my kids into school?

It can make residence lawful where the family rules include the child. Admissions, places, catchment rules, and fees remain separate.

Can children study on a Portugal Golden Visa?

Yes. Portugal's ARI family rules allow dependants to live, work, and study.

Can children study through Italy's investor route?

Yes, once the family permit is in place. Plan around reunification timing rather than the nulla osta alone.

Do we need to live there during the school year?

Practically, yes. A zero-stay permit rule keeps a card valid; it does not remove the child's need to attend school during term.

What happens when a child turns 21 in Greece?

They are no longer included as a dependent child on the investor file. Article 95 provides an independent three-year permit if they previously held the family-reunification permit.

Can EB-5 children attend school in the US?

The US route can support school as part of a move, including for eligible concurrent filers, but green-card residence and child aging-out rules still matter.

How much is International School of Athens for 2026/27?

The school’s published 2026/27 table runs from €8,700 (nursery / pre-KG) to €15,000 (Grades 11–12), plus a one-off registration fee (€1,700 for KG–12) and optional transport. Confirm the current fee page before budgeting.

Can a 22-year-old stay on a Greece Golden Visa as a dependent child?

Not as an Art. 95 dependent child. Unmarried children are included while under 21. A prior family-permit holder can move to an independent three-year permit under Article 95.

Does a zero-stay card let my child attend remotely from another country?

No. The permit may renew with zero nights. Classroom enrolment still expects the child to attend during term unless the school itself offers a separate remote programme.
